Lauriston community- supporting those in need
Monday, 11 May 2020

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Lauriston’s Community Service Coordinator Sarah Jessup (Mitchell, 1980) has been rallying the community to help provide food and essential groceries to those in need.

Thanks to the generous support of current families, staff and the broader community bags of essentials have been provided to organisations including:

  • Igniting Change, a tiny charity committed to working with people on the fringes of society;
  • the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, who are currently supporting 1300 asylum seekers unable to work or access government support;
  • Southport Housing in South Melbourne, who provide housing and support for young people and single parents who would otherwise remain homeless;
  • Collingwood Neighbourhood House, located in Richmond, which provides a community hub for the more than 8,000 who live in the towers and town houses that make up the Collingwood Social Housing precinct. This community includes a large number of single parents with small children, individuals living alone with mental illness, newly arrived refugees and long term welfare recipients;
  • St Kilda Gatehouse, which provides support for women involved in street based sex work in St Kilda, and to young women and girls affected by sexual exploitation.

This truly is an incredible example of the Lauriston Spirit in action.
