    Posted: 14/4/2025

We were sad to recently learn of the passing of Marg Edmonds who was a beloved member of the Class of 1959.  Marg sadly passed away on 10 December 2024 after a long battle with liver disease.  Marg was with her daughter and sons when she gently and peacefully passed away.

Marg was a Life Member of the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club, and the family hosted a beautiful and happy memorial for her on Friday 17 January at the Anglesea Surf Club. It was such a great party - Marg's daughter Kellie said she would have been disappointed to miss it!!  Kellie, a teacher at Mentone Girls' Grammar, also mentioned that her mum was so very fond of her time at Lauriston, which was mentioned in her eulogy, and this has been an influence on Kellie's own passion for educating girls.

We extend our most heartfelt condolences to Kellie and her brothers on the loss of their darling mum.

  • June Cameron (Upjohn, OL 1951)

    Posted: 5/2/2025

June Cameron, a cherished alumna of Lauriston Girls' School, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, 2024, at the age of 90. In a poignant testament to their lifelong bond, her beloved husband, Neil, passed away just one day earlier, on 24 December 2024.

June grew up on Malvern Road, Malvern, and began her lifelong association with Lauriston in 1939 when she started kindergarten. Over the next 13 years, she distinguished herself as a dedicated student, earning numerous accolades. In 1948, she was awarded the School Certificate with Honours and received the Junior Angus Mitchell Prize. The following year, she served as Vice Form Captain. In 1950, she achieved House Colours and successfully completed School Leaving in seven subjects. Her final year at Lauriston, 1951, saw her shine as a Prefect, Captain of Irving House, Joint Winner of the Senior Angus Mitchell Prize, Captain of Basketball, and a member of the swimming team. She was also awarded the J.C.H. Non-Resident Scholarship, for Melbourne University, recognising her outstanding academic achievements.

June's connection to Lauriston extended beyond her own time at the school, as many of her family members are also proud alumnae. Her sister Rosemary Gough (Upjohn, OL 1947), sister-in-law Brenda Upjohn (Doggett, OL 1952), nieces Sarah Gough (OL 1974) and Anna Le Deux (Gough, OL 1980), and grandniece Claire Upjohn (OL 2023) all shared in the Lauriston legacy that was so dear to June's heart.

June was an exceptional physiotherapist and advocate for children and adults with physical disabilities. June had a remarkable 40 year association with what was once the Spastic Society (now Scope Australia) working as a physiotherapist, aiding young people in ameliorating conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy, then joining the board following her retirement.  Both June and Neil were highly respected and active members of the Meredith community for many years.

June and Neil will both be remembered for their kindness, intelligence, and deep sense of loyalty—to family, friends, and the Lauriston community. June's passing marks the end of a remarkable life, but her legacy will live on in the generations of Lauriston women who follow in her footsteps.

  • June Mendoza AO OBE (OL 1939)

    Posted: 13/6/2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of June Mendoza, a distinguished portrait painter whose remarkable career spanned decades and continents. June, who held numerous prestigious titles including Officer of Australia (A.O.), Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.), and memberships in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (R.P.) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.), passed away peacefully just shy of her 100th birthday.

Born into a musical family, June was the daughter of John Morton, a musician, and Dot (Mendoza, OL 1916), a musician and composer. Her early life was rich with artistic exposure, as she toured with her mother through opera, ballet, and musicals, often working in mime parts and crowd scenes with the de Basil Russian Ballet Company. By the age of 12, June's passion for art was evident and she began life classes at 14.

June's career as an artist began in her teenage years while at Lauriston, with her work ranging from book jackets and magazine illustrations to record sleeves and town-planning exhibition artwork. She even ventured into theatre, radio, film, and television as an actress before dedicating herself fully to painting and portraiture.

We are proud that hanging proudly in Irving Hall at Lauriston is a portrait of former Head Mistress Gladys Davies, painted by June and gifted to the school in 1973.

Her life and career took her around the globe, including significant periods in the Philippines (1960-1965) and Australia (1969-1973) due to her husband's overseas postings. Married to Keith Mackrell, a former Director of Shell International and non-executive director for various organizations, June balanced her professional commitments with her family life, raising four children: three daughters, Elliet Mackrell (OL 1972), Kim Mackrell (OL 1974), and Lee Mackrell (OL 1977), and one son, Ashley.

June's illustrious career is best reflected in the impressive roster of subjects she painted. Her portraits include members of royalty such as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Diana Princess of Wales, and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. She captured the likenesses of numerous religious leaders, military figures, legal luminaries, and prominent personalities in music, opera, ballet, sports, broadcasting, theatre, academia, medicine, and business. Notable sitters included Baroness Margaret Thatcher, Sir John Major, Dame Joan Sutherland, Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Thomas Allen, and Lord Geoffrey Howe, among many others.

Her group portraits, including those of the House of Commons in session and the House of Representatives for the New Parliament Building in Canberra, stand as testaments to her skill and versatility.

June was honoured with honorary doctorates from the University of Bath and Loughborough University, and she was a Freeman of the City of London. Her contributions to the arts and her exceptional talent have left an indelible mark on the world of portraiture.

June Mendoza's legacy lives on through her vast body of work, which continues to inspire and captivate. She will be remembered not only for her extraordinary artistic achievements but also for her dedication to her craft and her ability to bring the essence of her subjects to life on canvas.

June is survived by a legacy of portraits that will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

  • Sue Ingham (Henry, OL 1961)

    Posted: 12/6/2024
Lauriston Girls' School, together with the Old Lauristonians' Association mourns the passing of Susan Ingham (Henry, OL 1961), a cherished wife, mother, writer, researcher, and environmental activist, who passed away on April 29, 2024. Susan's life was a rich tapestry of exploration, education, and dedication, woven through her many passions and the love she shared with her family and community.

After attending Lauriston and being involved in many sports and drama productions, Sue pursued a degree in Art History at Melbourne University, laying the foundation for a lifelong journey into the world of art. Driven by a fervent curiosity and a desire to experience art firsthand, she travelled overseas after her graduation. Her adventures led her to Italy, where she met and married an Englishman, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Together, they returned to Australia and raised two sons, sharing over 50 years of adventures and creating a loving family.

Susan's professional life was as vibrant and multifaceted as her personal one. She was deeply involved in the world of art and education, teaching art history to students and continually expanding her knowledge. Her academic journey culminated in a PhD in contemporary Indonesian art, a pursuit that took her to Indonesia multiple times over six years.

Her later years brought new challenges and directions. A car accident and the passage of time eventually slowed her down, necessitating an end to her beloved sailing adventures. Yet, this transition marked the beginning of her deep involvement in local activism. Susan became a passionate advocate for environmental preservation, focusing her efforts on protecting the precious green spaces of Sydney’s suburbs. Her commitment to conservation led her to join the Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society, where she worked tirelessly to protect and enhance the environment, ensuring that her legacy of care for the planet would endure.

Susan's life was a testament to the power of curiosity, passion, and commitment. Her contributions to art, education, and environmental activism have left an indelible mark on her community and beyond. She will be remembered for her intellect, her adventurous spirit, and her unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.

Sue Ingham is survived by her beloved husband Tim, her two sons, and a community that will miss her deeply. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched and in the green spaces she fought so hard to protect.

Lauriston Girls’ School was saddened to learn that Pru Kempson passed away on 25 April 2022.  Pru’s loving friend Fran Kohnert was honoured when she was asked by Pru’s family, to speak at Pru's memorial on 29 May 2022.  We are privileged that Fran has shared an extract of her address, so our community and the Class of 1964 can reflect and remember their friend Pru.

My Best Friend Pru, by Fran Kohnert (Erskine, 1964)

Pru and I met in 1960 at Lauriston when we were just 13 years old.  It seems to me we shared our lives from then on.

Pru was a country girl from Dromana who had attended Red Hill Consolidated School and rode her horse to Pony Club at weekends. When she commenced at Lauriston, she boarded with a family in Malvern.  I lived with my family in Glen Iris, and we spent many weekends in each other’s homes.

Lauriston prided itself on its academic excellence and on producing confident, enquiring young women. Pru and I seized the many opportunities the school afforded us.

At lunch time there were sports practices, Madrigals, and Choir, which we loved. There was Drama, and our Literature teacher, Mrs de Fossard took us to Emerald Hill Theatre to see Shakespeare and Oedipus Rex.

The Headmistress, Miss Davis always said, ‘When you go to Paris’ or ‘When you go to Spain.’ There was never any doubt that we would travel. Maybe this inspired Pru’s love of travel.

Pru went on the school trip to New Guinea where she saw locals dancing in little more than colourful feathers.

Above all, there was the End of Year Musical. Our final year (1964) performed The Boyfriend, and we could all sing every song as well as dance the Charleston. Some of us still can!

Just as exciting as the Musical was the End of Year School Dance. In both Leaving (Year 11) and Matric (Year 12) it was a source of both anxiety and thrills. We spent weeks plucking up the courage to ask a boy and selecting our dresses. The boys had to wear black tie.

Sometimes we went to the Melbourne Town Hall by tram (always in school uniform) to attend the Youth Concerts. Thus began a love of attending concerts which lasted a lifetime. Pru regularly attended the Australian Chamber Orchestra. We both loved the Australian Ballet and have subscribed since it was at the Palais in St Kilda. Pru enjoyed modern dance and at one time became very involved with the Sydney Dance Company.

As girls when we went to Pru’s home at Dromana, Mrs Duncan met us at Frankston Station. We always called in at the Grandparents’ home in Mt Martha and there was a big joke about Pru raiding the ginger jar. There was always lots of laughter.

There were parties at the farm on the tennis court and I have recently found an invitation to our End of School Day’s Party. There was also a fancy dress party for Pru’s 21st.

Pru was delighted when her son Duncan and partner Kim decided to send their daughter Sophia to Lauriston.  Sophia is currently in Grade 5.  Having her granddaughter attend Lauriston to continue the tradition, was deeply thrilling for Pru, especially as Lauriston was where both Pru and her mother Jean Duncan (Cohen, 1933) had been so happy.

Lauriston provided a foundation for the rest of our lives. Most important of all it became the basis of “Girls’ Night”, an extraordinary friendship group of nine girls who have met regularly for five decades. When reminiscing, I was reminded of one memorable dinner in the ‘70s at Pru’s which lasted till 3:00 am.

The ‘Girls’ Night,’ girls have shared a lifetime of experiences.

There have been belly laughs and silly throwaway comments resulting in complete hysteria, beautiful dinners, tears, practical advice about gardens and children and stepchildren and a fantastic trip to Tassie and very recently a lunch in the dairy at Pru and Peter’s lovely farm.

Think of Pru and you think of her wonderful smile. Think of Pru and you think of her vitality and her wisdom. Think of Pru and you think of her hospitality and generosity.

My School days with Pru were are mere five years out of 75 but they contributed to her love of music, her love of art and literature, and her determination when embarking on a new project.  Her interest in people, her enjoyment of nature, her humour, her light-hearted view of life came from her home and family.  She was so positive, so adventurous, so vivacious. Pru really did live her life to the fullest. “If you want to do it, do it now”, she’d say. “It’s later than you think.”

Thank you for the fun and friendship my friend.

    Fran Kohnert (Erskine, 1964)

  • Cherie Glaser (Braham, 1951)

    Posted: 28/3/2022

We were saddened to be advised of the passing of Cherie Glaser.  Cherie was a member of Andrews House, was a Probationer at the school in 1951 and studied English Expression, Modern History and Art.  It was no surprise to learn that Cherie, along with her husband Walter Glaser, were a very professional writer and photographer team, who travelled the world to write interesting, offbeat material for publications worldwide.

This interest and fascination for travel may possibly have been inspired by Cherie's husband's history dating back to WWII in Austria, 1938.  Click here to read the absolutely fascinating story behind Cherie's husband's family's emigration to Australia that was instigated by a group of Melbourne guests at a dinner party in Toorak, held in 1938!

Cherie and Walter took a trip to Turkey some years ago where they met a young Romanian. He had escaped from the communist regime, and wanted to make his way to the West. They tried to assist him in obtaining a visa and helped to support him in Turkey until he could emigrate to Canada.

Care and compassion for others has crossed the generations of the Glaser family. Walter and Cherie would often share the story of their son, living in Israel and who took in a Muslim family who had fled Sudan on foot, sheltering the refugee family of six in his home in Jerusalem while campaigning for the rights of asylum seekers.

“We need not be a head of state or similar in order to change the world,” says Cherie's husband Walter.
